Whole Wheat Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour

  • 1 teaspoon honey

  • 4 teaspoons baking powder

  • 3/4 teaspoons cream of tartar

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup butter cold and cubed

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice

  • 1 scant cup 2% milk or almond milk

Utensils:

  • food processor

  • measuring cup

  • medium mixing bowl

  • whisk

  • wooden spoon

  • baking sheet

  • parchment paper

  • 3-inch biscuit cutter

  • basting brush


Instructions:

  1. prepare ingredients

  2. preheat oven to 425°F

  3. get a measuring cup and add 1 tbsp of white vinegar

  4. pour milk in until the mixture reaches 1 cup and allow it to sit for 5 minutes to create buttermilk

  5. get a food processor and add 3 cups of whole wheat flour

  6. add 4 tsp of baking powder to the processor

  7. add 3/4 tsp of cream of tartar to the processor

  8. add 1/2 tsp of salt to the processor and pulse to combine

  9. add 1/2 cup of cold and cubed butter to the processor and pulse until the butter is small and pea sized

  10. get a medium mixing bowl and add the prepared buttermilk

  11. add 1 egg to the bowl

  12. add 1 tsp of honey to the bowl and whisk together until smooth

  13. transfer the mixture in the food processor to the bowl along with the wet ingredients and use a wooden spoon to mix together; don't overmix

  14. turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead 10 times until the dough holds together

  15. fold the dough over a couple times then pat and roll the dough into a 1-1 1/4 inch rectangle

  16. use a 3-inch biscuit cutter to cut the dough into 10 equal rounds

  17. line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place biscuits onto the baking sheet

  18. brush the tops of the biscuits with milk and place in the oven at 425°F for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown

When you are ready for serving, brush on some butter and drizzle with jam, honey or butter if you desire.
